French [5/8] seed Baptiste Bouin and Spanish No.1 seed Marta Dominguez have been crowned the new FISU World University champions after victories over Hong Kong, China duo Wai Lok To and Cheng Nga Ching, respectively, in Johannesburg’s Parkview Squash Centre, South Africa.
Unexpected finalist Bouin went into the match full of confidence after dominant wins over China’s Sun Yu Kon and Singapore’s Jerome Aw in his first two matches, followed by straight game victories over Czech No.3 seed Ondrej Vorlícek in the quarter-final and Hong Kong, China’s No.2 seed Chung Yat Long in the semi-final.
Once again, Bouin was in the ascendency throughout, with the 21-year-old cruising through the final against [9/16] seeded To 11-4, 11-5, 11-9 in 31 minutes to complete the impressive feat of making it through the entire tournament without dropping a single game.
In the women’s final, top seed Dominguez came from behind in an entertaining five-game win over No.2 seed Cheng.
Cheng was the stronger player in game one, taking the lead with an 11-7 win. Dominguez recovered, hitting back with 11-5 and 11-8 wins. Cheng then took an even fourth game 11-9 to take the match into a fifth game, which Dominguez dominated 11-4.
The team event of the FISU World University Championships Squash begins today, with the final taking place on 08 September.
